About Our Grade 2 Homeschool Curriculum

There is no time limit on completion of a grade. You can begin our courses at any time in the year.

My Homeschool Curriculum Year/ Grade 2 is similar to Grade 2 in the American education system.

Our Grade 2 Full Program is a one-year full curriculum. In most circumstances this is the one we recommend.

Our Grade 2 Lite Program is a half-year condensed version of our full curriculum. It is a great entry point for students who are not ready to progress to a higher grade, or for families starting mid-year who do not need a full year of curriculum.

After purchase, login details will be sent to your email address. You can then access all the course materials including planning documents. We use Moodle as our online learning platform.

Grade 2 Homeschool Curriculum Subject Guide

Our literature based approach includes many living books, a key concept of the Charlotte Mason method. Living books have something special about them: they flow, they capture the imagination, and they tell us the facts while they give us the story. A living book is written by a passionate author who communicates this passion to the reader in a literary language.

As Charlotte Mason penned:

“A book may be long or short, old or new, easy or hard, written by a great man or a lesser man, and yet be the living book which finds its way to the mind of a young reader.”

Our courses are delivered in a digital format. We use a customised version of Moodle as our learning platform. Many resources can be downloaded and printed and used offline.

Year 2 Global Goodies and Extension Work

One of the wonderful attributes of homeschooling is the ability to individualise your curriculum to suit your family’s interests and abilities. To help you do this we have created our Global Goodie resources. Offering an international focus, these resources will continue to inspire your child in a wide variety of subjects.

Our Global Goodies are not part of our core curriculum but are available to give you an additional element of flexibility to our courses and to give international families an alternative to some of our Australia specific resources. They are also for families looking for additional Charlotte Mason inspired resources.

You can swap out similar resources or add them as extension work. These resources are not written into your Weekly Planner.

Year 2 World Geography - World Book Traveller

The Year Two Global Goodies include:

  • World Book Traveller with World Map and Map Markers
  • Bible History Makers and Timeline Markers – Bible history resource to complement Ancient History.
  • Scripture Copywork (Ball & Stick and Italics Font)
  • Aesop’s Fables Copywork (Ball & Stick Font)

Please Note: Global Goodies are only available with the purchase of the Full Version of the Grade 2 course.

English: Grade 2 Homeschool Curriculum

Primary Language Lessons is a key resource used within our My Homeschool graded courses from Kindergarten to Grade 6: This resource is used three times per week throughout the year. It includes a variety of lessons that follow a Charlotte Mason approach to learning English.

Primary Language Lessons

Comprehension lessons are done using narration and conversation. Children are encouraged to explain what they are seeing as a pre-writing skill. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are taught by using sentences and Dolch word lists. Reading is encouraged with simple stories using a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

This resource has been written so you can pick up and start the lesson without preparation. Lessons are short, taking a maximum of 15 minutes. Many lessons can be done orally so your child will not get bogged down in worksheets. You don’t need to buy any other books to complete this resource. The relevant passages are all provided within. Written lessons are completed in a notebook (or exercise book) so there is no extra printing of worksheets. Answer guide provided.

Please Note: Our Grade 2 Lite offers a condensed 2 term version (18 weeks) of this resource.

Year 2 Copywork

Copywork is a key element of the My Homeschool English program. In Year 2 children continue to work on improving their handwriting style modelling Foundation Font, the recommended font for Australian schools.

Our first resource, Downunder Copywork Book 1 begins with tracing words and then progresses to writing on lines below the text. There is a place for your students to make their own illustrations and a few pictures to colour in. Literature includes passages that are thoughtfully selected using, quality, age appropriate, Australian and New Zealand poetry, fiction and non-fiction.

Aesop's Fables copywork

Aesop’s Fables Copywork (Secular) or Scripture Copywork, continue to work on handwriting skills. Both copywork books are provided and the parent can choose which one they think is the best one for their child.

Please Note: These are not part of the Year 2 Lite program.

Picture Book Links: With living books forming the cornerstone of our approach to learning, we use a selection of picture books in our curriculum that tie in with the themes we are teaching in science, history, geography and English. Some of these are recommended purchases and essential to complete the course, while others are complementary titles to search for at your local library.

Where possible, we link to our selected titles in a video format, so you can watch them being read online. This can be helpful if you can’t find a book, are homeschooling on the road, or if you are watching your budget.

Math: Grade 2 Homeschool Curriculum

First Math Lessons –  Offering 3 lessons per week, this is a full year maths course aligned to the Australian Curriculum inspired by the Charlotte Mason method and current good practice. It provides a range of hands-on activities for your child each week to practice and enjoy maths. This maths program is exclusive to My Homeschool and has been developed specifically for the homeschool setting. It will give you the confidence to teach the foundations of maths well.

Please Note: Grade 2 Lite offers 2 terms (18 weeks) of this resource.

World History

Our living book approach to history studies uses age appropriate authors popular with Charlotte Mason home educators. The goal is not for children to memorise names and dates but rather to understand the flow of history.

Year 2 is the beginning of their chronological history studies which will be continued throughout primary school. More in-depth history studies will be covered again in the high school years.

We use History Makers – Early Civilisations once per week. It includes short chapters for read aloud lessons and oral narration.

Early Civilizations

After their history read aloud children make an Ancient History Timeline Folder with timeline figures that match the period of history they have just studied. Our history timelines continue throughout Year 3 and 4.

World History Timeline

Some additional historical fiction has been suggested appropriate to the period studied. These would also be read aloud.

Bible History makers

Bible History Maker: This is a brief overview of people and events that appear in ancient history and the Bible. It includes selected stories to read directly from the Bible, and then some additional Bible archaeology and history. Timeline figures are also included to add to your ancient history timeline.

Please Note: This is an optional Global Goodie and is not provided in the Lite edition.

Australian History & Geography

Portions of Australian history are taught in all years through literature and poetry.

This year we focus on one famous Australian woman with our Mary MacKillop Lapbook. This is a fun, craft-based activity that teaches about a significant woman in the history of Australia.

Mary mackillop lapbook

Australian Book Traveller: Is a literature based unit study which incorporates a trip around Australia using award winning Australian picture books. It includes aspects of Australia’s cultural heritage including stories from Indigenous Australians.

These books are provided for you online and you can also access them at the library.

Australian Book Traveller

Your child will make record their literary journey with the Australian Map Journal (sold separately). Map markers are provided to use with the map.

Australia map for kids

World Geography

World Book Traveller covers the seven continents of the world with picture books and mapping exercises. This Global Goodie can be used as an extension or substitute for Australian Book Traveller.

Year 2 World Geography - World Book Traveller

Please Note: This is an optional Global Goodie and is not provided in the Lite edition

Science: Grade 2 Homeschool Curriculum

Nature study is a practice and pursuit that you may associate with the Charlotte Mason method. It is something that is encouraged throughout your child’s education and continues through to our high school graded courses.

To help you with this, in Grade 2, we use  Earth Science Conversations. It is a series of guided conversations, simple science experiments, nature study, and living books that cover science and geography in the Australian Curriculum for Year 2.

Study topics include weather, outdoor observance and Earth’s assets. And don’t worry if you don’t know a lot about these topics, we have extra information to give you the support you need when teaching this topic.

Many of these books are also provided in our Picture Book Links resource which you can read online.

Please Note: Grade 2 Lite only offers Earth’s Assets (1 Term) of this resource.

Earth Science Studies

World Languages: Year 2 Homeschool Curriculum

Our history studies include the origins of languages and words from ancient times including the Phoenicians, hieroglyphics and Greek writing.

Our World Languages resource includes videos and songs on counting to ten in five different languages. We also provide information, tips and recommended resources for those families looking to pursue instruction in a foreign language. We are happy to include this resource in both our Full Version and Lite Edition so your child has a great start in learning languages.

Creative Arts: My Homeschool Curriculum

Creative and Practical Arts are taught with other subjects including: nature journaling, literature based unit studies, picture study and music appreciation.

Dramatic presentations are practised during poetry recital and acting out of stories. An animated version of Dot and the Kangaroo is also viewed.

Art and Music Appreciation courses are provided with My Homeschool membership, so you have a choice of rotations, including some specifically developed for young learners. You can simply choose one rotation for your family to use.

Some rotations have additional books to purchase while others have everything you need provided online. Your My Homeschool membership also gives you access to our Handicrafts resource which includes a range of practical art and craft ideas with instructional videos.

Health and P.E: Year 2 Homeschool Curriculum

Physical Education

We have included a series of fun kids exercises in our online WOW – workout world classes.

Personal Health & Development

This commonsense subject is taught through the activities of daily living and participation in local sports and community events.  Healthy Conversations checklists are provided for each stage of the syllabus so you can teach respectful relationships and personal growth as you deem appropriate.

The My Homeschool team includes experienced home educators who provide mentor support and help you deal with issues as they arise. We don’t provide tutoring or specific lesson support on an individual, one-on-one basis.

We are always happy to answer questions about our curriculum and how to implement it and we encourage our members to get involved in the Community Forum.

We have a vibrant online community where you can share stories and help others, purchase books you might need and connect with other My Homeschool families in your area.

You are the teacher and you oversee lessons. We provide homeschool teacher training as well through our self-paced courses How To Homeschool 101 and for our more experience members the Boost Your Homeschool.

We are continually adding to our collection of resources to help support you in your role as teacher to your children.

Our Primary Full Version course is 36 weeks of study, organised over 4 terms.  8 weeks are set topics and the 9th week is an assessment and review week that often includes a project. Our Lite Edition gives you 18 weeks of study, enough for 2 terms.

Each week has its own Weekly Planner checklist which is available in an online format or as a downloadable PDF to print and store in a folder, making record keeping easy.

At the end of each term there is a downloadable report of work achieved over the term. Parents add comments and assessments of their child’s progress in each area of learning.

We know that parents want their children to thrive and that testing is popular in many school environments as a measure of progress.  When you homeschool you do not need to test your children as much as they do at school, as you are assessing as you go.

We give you tips and support on how to assess your child in a way that suits homeschooling, so you can be confident that your child is progressing well in your homeschool.

There are no formal tests until Year 5.

FAQ - Course Questions

Here are a few of frequently asked questions answered.

I'm American. Can I still use your curriculum?

Yes you sure can! In fact some Americans already do.

Whilst we are Australian, we are also Christian and have based our curriculum on the ideas and philosophies found in the Charlotte Mason method. However we tweaked her method to include contemporary resources and best educational practices and we used the Australian Curriculum as our framework. Therefore you'll also find topics that aren't traditionally found in a Charlotte Mason curriculum such as literature genres, novel studies, essay writing, contemporary science, and economics. We also use digital mediums and video lessons to help your child visualize concepts.

We include world literature, history and geography across all grades. Our science and nature lessons includes stories, flora and fauna found across the globe. Your child will not just learn about America - they will learn about the world and find a reference point for America's place within it.

For families wanting to include more American history and geography that is very easy to do, you can simply add a favourite American history book or American atlas.  We also encourage you to teach American civics and government as it suits your family. You are blessed with many great options to choose from and we give some suggestions.

Millions of American families choose to homeschool their child and you can too. Given that every USA state treats homeschooling in a different way, My Homeschool is happy to make the homeschooling process easy for you no matter where you live. We provide extensive record keeping resources and 180 days of lessons spread over 4 terms of nine weeks.

On the purchase of each graded course you receive a range of resources, all designed for you to homeschool well. This includes:

  • a planning template specific to that grade that you can use to see what work will be covered;
  • a Weekly Planner so you know exactly what you are doing and when;
  • a Scope and Sequence to better understand how the course is structured; and
  • guidelines on how to test your child and carry out exams based on the Charlotte Mason method which are useful for those families needing to address the practice of standardized testing due to state requirements.

These tools allow you to better identify where you may wish to swap out topics to respond to the needs of your own family but are also designed by homeschool moms for homeschooling parents so you can simply start homeschooling, knowing that you have all you need to do it well.

I'd like to know what additional books I need. Can I see the booklists?

My Homeschool uses living books in many subjects. Many of these are provided within our course as ebooks or as online versions. However some books will need to be bought. The purchase of these books are factored into our Additional Costs estimates and we give you links on where they are sold.

Our booklists are carefully curated and are only available as a part of our program.

Some are for your child to read alone, and some are to be read aloud by the parent. We also include some online and audio book options. Books allocated for reading aloud provide an opportunity for families to discuss them broadly. Parents are able to offer the scaffolding and support which will help their child navigate the literature which may be challenging for a variety of reasons.

We do use secular books and these do not always line up perfectly with a Christian world view. This also reflects Charlotte Mason’s approach. We have tried our best to make good choices in our literature and we have read what we recommend. We have rejected many books in the process of writing this curriculum. Finding a perfect book is almost impossible but our book selection is thought out and many of our books are recommended by others who follow a Charlotte Mason education.

We’ve also included culturally significant Australian literature which often highlights what was happening in the era it was written. For this reason, some of the literature may well be ‘politically incorrect’ or old fashioned by today’s standards, but at the time of writing it was not. These books offer an opportunity to teach your child about the culture of the times.

Our books were chosen with the Australian Curriculum in mind, however we understand that you may not want to read all the books we have chosen. Feel free to replace them with a title that suits your family’s needs.

We offer alternatives and extension suggestions in our My Homeschool Reading Lounge. This is our exclusive online library catalogue of book list suggestions and alternatives.

Can I just buy individual subjects and resources?

My Homeschool does provide many free homeschool resources.

Our curriculum is a structured program so we do not sell our curriculum separately.

If you are planning on using My Homeschool as your main curriculum, we suggest you consider your approach to mix and matching resources as you may experience overlap or gaps in subsequent years. For this reason, we recommend buying appropriate grades for each child so that you will have a sequential well curated curriculum.

Will this work for teaching multiple children?

Choice has been built into this curriculum to give you the flexibility you need for teaching multiple ages and adapting to the special needs and interests of your child/children.  We encourage families to do read-alouds, nature study, handicrafts, art and music appreciation as a group.

Our World History subject from Year 2 to Year 6 encourages parents to read aloud the history content. When teaching a few children in this age group at once we recommend you only teach one history cycle at a time. Since World History is not part of the Australian Curriculum this will not impact your curriculum compliance.

More details on working with multiple children can be found here.

Will I be able to teach this program? It sounds quite academic.

It’s natural to feel a little daunted when we think about teaching our children. We don’t want to intimidate you, we are here to support you. We won’t send you a bunch of downloads and send you on your way. We also teach you how to teach. Our guides and homeschool expertise will help you instruct your children. You can also post questions on our forum when you hit a snag. You’ll learn some new things and brush up on old things as you teach your children. It’s a very satisfying experience and many veteran homeschoolers report co-learning as one of the unexpected benefits of homeschooling.

I already have a very busy life? How much time will this involve?

My Homeschool follows the Charlotte Mason practice of shorter lessons so there is time for the student to follow other interests. Approximately three to four days per week is allocated to group study and parent reading aloud in the primary years. In high school we have written a four day schedule with Day 5 free for other planned educational activities.

Your day will usually include consistent lesson time in the mornings, leaving afternoons free for natural learning and play. You can also get some of your jobs done and pursue other interests.

I Began To Crumble It Seemed Too Hard

It was in Grade 2 that my little school at home began to crumble. I knew my children needed a good education but my curriculum was worksheets and textbooks. I felt like I was always pushing away my other children so we could ‘do school’. It wasn’t working and I gave up and put my oldest son in school for a term.

Year 2 homeschool curriculum girl

When my second child was in Grade 2,  I was a new convert to the Charlotte Mason method and we were finally enjoying homeschooling and my kids were learning so much. I was DIYing my curriculum but now melding the state curriculum with Charlotte Mason’s methods was a problem. Finding books that met the state syllabus was difficult.

Unfortunately, following the government curriculum documentation requirements is a problem for many homeschoolers.

As regulations begin to tighten across the globe, many people find the documentation process a burden, some just don't do it and hope they don't get caught, others write up fake documents at the end of the year and some feel so burdened by the requirements, they send their kids back to school just to avoid the paperwork.

None of these are good options!

But I've found a solution. In 2007, I started publishing resources for home educators and showing them how to use the Charlotte Mason method for writing up their homeschool plans and reports. And people kindly thanked me and told me our resources and guides were ‘pots of gold’ and it had made their homeschool journey ‘so much easier’. They kept asking for more help.

And when my children had graduated from my homeschool and gone to university, I launched My Homeschool so I could continue serving the homeschooling community and help others successfully home educate their children!

Story by Michelle Morrow (Founder of My Homeschool)

I’m really in love with the literature rich style of My Homeschool. I can see the benefit and how it will help us be closer as a family. I have a 3 month old as well and this style lends itself to the busy mum. GREAT WORK!!! I really like the links within the weekly lesson plans. While I love having a book in my hands, it is great if we are out or I don’t have the resource close by, to be able to click on it and use it. My son also likes to click on them and have a perusal before we start. For him it’s not hard to find what we are doing for the week as it is mostly all there laid out.

We are absolutely loving Dot & the Kangaroo!! what a gorgeous story, my children are captivated!!

Really loving A Book for Kids poetry. Puts a smile on our faces.

I am using it to teach 2 children. The only reason I am finding the workload heavy is because I have a 3-month-old. He hasn’t been well (silent reflux), so trying to fit everything in when I have a sick baby has been hard. I have chosen to purchase a course for my younger and give my eldest extension type work. This seems to be working so far. I am loving that I can teach them together, as it feels more like “family learning” rather than “school learning” to me. We are doing it together!!

Join Our Community

When you buy a course through My Homeschool you are joining a community that supports and mentors parents interested in educating their children academically and spiritually.

We give you a shortcut to help you get straight into giving your child a delightful and robust education without spending days and days researching and tweaking unsuitable content.

Our homeschool curriculum is a contemporary Charlotte Mason curriculum. And we make record keeping easy because we’ve already done 75% of the documentation.

We Care About What Your Children Are Taught

We aim to give you confidence that you can educate your children with a worldview that honours Judeo-Christian principles and has strong academic outcomes. However, our resources are not predominantly Christian. We look for outstanding resources and often a secular resource is the best option.

We have a number of families who use our curriculum who are secular or from other faiths.

We do not include devotional material, specific religious instruction or sex education in our curriculum. We leave that up to parents.

We Wanted A Curriculum That Worked For Home Educators

Our curriculum writers have already done the juggle of homeschooling a few children at once.

  • We knew how lovely and important it is to learn as a family so we made some lessons and read alouds possible to teach as a group.
  • We reduced the time needed for formal academics by crafting our curriculum so our resources and books often teach multiple topics.
  • We made each grade fit each state’s syllabus so you can get registered easily.
  • We gave you a streamlined intentional curriculum so you could give your children a wholesome integrated education from kindergarten to high school.
  • We made sure it was academically challenging so your children will have career options, and a pathway to university if needed.
  • We put it all in one place so you weren’t hunting around looking for resources every time you wanted to begin lessons.
  • We made it easy to access your lessons and planner when you were out and about or travelling just by picking up your smartphone.

We Use A Blended Learning Approach

My Homeschool lessons are provided in a blended learning format.

All our resources are digital and are located on Moodle, a renowned online learning platform used by many schools and universities. Using this format means we give you exceptional functionality which enables you to record your progress, and access your lessons from various digital devices and locations.  This format also enables us to keep our resources fresh and dynamic.

A laptop, tablet, or desktop computer is needed to use our courses. Access to a printer is also necessary.

PDFs can be downloaded and printed for offline reading but other resources can only be viewed from our learning platform.

The majority of our classes require reading from a real book or paper-based resource.

Writing exercises involve pencils and paper and many lessons are oral or conversation based.

Video lessons require access to the My Homeschool learning portal.

The Moodle App can be downloaded onto your smartphone for on the go lessons and checking progress but is not recommended as the main digital device for reading and viewing lessons.

You would think that by 10:30 everyone would have gone to bed. My Y2 is doing the Lesson 2 Southern Cross in Outdoor Observance. We purchased a good pair of binoculars on Saturday to watch the night sky and Southern Cross and totally lost track of time. I could even see 4 of Jupiter’s moons! Thanks for the enjoyable lessons you provide through My Home School!

Year 2 homeschool curriculum resources

I'm actually really just liking the balance of everything. Thank you again for providing such a fabulous curriculum.

Tania from Australia

Homeschool Review, Grade 2 & 4 Curriculum

Thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, we are Filipino expat family of 5 residing in Malaysia for almost 4 years now. Since 2010, we have been moving countries from Pacific to South Asia and Southeast Asia. Malaysia, by far, has been our longest relocation.

The decision to homeschool came after our resident visa to Australia has been delayed due to pandemic. For the past 2 terms we were DIY homeschooling (while waiting for our visa) using Australian curriculum as a guide on lessons and topics. But after 2 terms, I realized it was just drills and exercises. The learning was not holistic. The teacher in me (I was a licensed teacher in the Philippines before moving abroad), I searched the web and look for a homeschool provider, and that’s when I stumbled upon your website. After thorough reading and inquiries (Amanda has been very accommodating with my queries), we decided to register at My Homeschool.

We are on our 3rd week now and we love everything about My Homeschool curriculum. My kids came from a British school, and it was a smooth transition for them. In fact, some of the techniques and reading materials, they had at their previous school (like the Peter Rabbit book). Plus being exposed to Australian culture for several years…topics relating to/about Australia are easily understood. One challenging, since we are offshore, is that there are topics that could have been more exciting if we are in Australia, like the Australian or lesson on Plants Life. For now, we can do cope with videos and pictures on the internet (i.e., photos of Blue Mountains and Australian money).

But in general, two thumbs-up for the My Homeschool curriculum. It is very well curated that even if we are abroad, we can easily adopt it.

Thank you.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the effort that’s been put into My Homeschool! I had my AP visit yesterday and it went great! He’s giving me 12 months registration and said if he comes next year and I’m still using the My Homeschool curriculum then he’ll give two years, even for my kindy child who’ll be a new registration. Thank you so much for helping make this transition to homeschooling so much easier and providing such detailed documents. I’m truly grateful!

Homeschool Reviews, My Homeschool Multiple Grades

Dear Michelle,

Zoom interview with the approved person went really well...He was impressed with the plan and said he is recommending approval for 12 Months, so we were really happy about that. It means we can get really into learning now and not have to worry about interruptions!

Thanks for My Homeschool, I am pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to put the plans together without your resources! Even if I could have - it would have taken me hours and hours and a big headache of trying to understand what was required!

Three Cheers for My Homeschool, empowering parents to teach their precious loved ones!
